Morocco Enhances Beach Safety with Drones and Increased Lifeguard Presence

Morocco's Innovative Summer Safety Measures

On May 9, 2026, Morocco is putting the finishing touches on its summer safety measures along its picturesque coastline. In an effort to prevent drowning incidents, authorities are deploying thousands of seasonal lifeguards, who have received better compensation, alongside advanced surveillance drones. Beginning this week, lifeguards have settled along the coast, where they will remain until September. Chosen in April from candidates aged 20 to 40, these lifeguards are filling the gaps in coverage that the Civil Protection Service has faced, as explained by Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit, who noted that there were 3,315 recruits last year, highlighting the ongoing commitment to public safety.

Leveraging Technology for Enhanced Surveillance

To manage the influx of beachgoers, the city of Agadir has increased its lifeguard workforce from 200 to 215, with some lifeguards working year-round thanks to the region's favorable climate. To retain these young professionals, their monthly compensation has surged from 2,500 to 3,200 dirhams over a five-month period. A significant aspect of this season's enhancements relies on aerial technology. The use of drones has expanded to numerous beaches following successful trials conducted last summer in Agadir and Tangier. These flying devices provide an ultra-precise aerial overview, enabling control posts to detect potential risks and act swiftly during peak times. This strategic implementation is proving to be a crucial factor in ensuring the effectiveness of rescue operations, ultimately saving lives during critical moments.

The Ministry of Equipment is also initiating a drone monitoring project for Morocco's coastlines. This technical program, endowed with a budget of 500,000 dirhams, aims to monitor coastal erosion and marine submersion in four strategic regions across the Kingdom, from the Oriental region to Casablanca. This multifaceted approach not only emphasizes immediate safety but also considers long-term environmental stability.
