International Women's Day: Morocco's Commitment to Justice for Women
On the occasion of International Women's Rights Day, Morocco's Ministry of Justice hosted a national seminar in Rabat themed "Women's Access to Justice: Achievements, Challenges, and Perspectives." This event, organized in collaboration with the Council of Europe as part of the MA-JUST program, gathered government officials, judicial actors, constitutional institutions, and civil society organizations to discuss and promote women's rights in the legal sphere.
Expanding Dialogue to Strengthen Women's Rights
The seminar provided a unique platform for dialogue between public institutions and civil society, focusing on strategies to enhance women's access to justice. Around one hundred representatives from organizations dedicated to justice, human rights, and women's rights participated in the discussions, assessing Morocco's progress and examining the ongoing legislative reforms in both civil and criminal law. Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi highlighted Morocco's advancements in promoting women's rights, citing the 2004 Family Code reform and the 2011 Constitution, which have significantly bolstered equality and non-discrimination. He emphasized the need for a judicial system capable of ensuring women’s unrestricted and effective access to justice while safeguarding their rights against all forms of violence and discrimination.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Justice is emphasizing the institutionalization of a gender approach within the judicial system through the Gender-Sensitive Justice Observatory, which monitors and evaluates public policies and supports initiatives for women victims of violence. Following the seminar, a training session was initiated as part of the HELP program, focusing on "Gender Approach and Women's Access to Justice." This initiative aims to enhance the skills of legal professionals and incorporate gender considerations into daily judicial practices, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and inclusive justice system. Participants underscored the necessity of strengthening partnerships with civil society, which plays a crucial role in promoting equality and supporting public policies aimed at ensuring effective access to justice for women.
