Growing Dissent Against Normalization Efforts in Morocco
In recent developments, the Kingdom of Morocco is witnessing a significant surge in opposition regarding its accelerating normalization with Israel, often referred to as the "Zionist entity." This opposition is manifesting through various organizations, political parties, human rights activists, and anti-normalization groups that are vocally denouncing the government's plans to elevate diplomatic relations to the level of ambassadors. The outcry has gained momentum on social media, with an increasing number of citizens expressing their refusal to accept these diplomatic changes.
Demonstrations, marches, and sit-ins are scheduled across multiple cities in Morocco on September 25, 26, and 27, signaling a united front against this perceived betrayal of national sentiments. The Moroccan Front for Supporting Palestine and Against Normalization has labeled the deepening of ties with Israel as a "dangerous escalation." They are advocating for a focus on ceasing aggression against the Palestinian people and holding accountable those who violate international law.
Additionally, the Unified Socialist Party has condemned the normalization as a “shame and disgrace,” reiterating that the Moroccan populace has consistently expressed its disapproval of relations with Israel. The Moroccan Commission for Supporting the Causes of the Ummah has also voiced its concerns, calling for an end to the normalization process and urging the closure of the Israeli liaison office.
The Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) has firmly rejected the normalization of diplomatic, economic, and security ties, warning that this could diminish the international isolation of Israel. BDS Morocco has characterized the current situation as a new phase in the normalization process initiated back in 2020, particularly with the potential establishment of embassies and the resumption of direct flights between Morocco and Israel. The National Action Group for Palestine has also deemed the transition from liaison offices to embassies as a critical and harmful shift.
On an individual level, notable figures such as human rights activist Mohammed Ghafri and journalist Ali Anouzla have criticized the normalization efforts. Ghafri describes the situation as a "new escalation," while Anouzla has pointed out the lack of official communication from the Moroccan government as Israeli media reported on these developments. He emphasizes that this transition is occurring at a sensitive time when support for Palestine remains robust among the Moroccan public.
