Emergence of a New Government Coalition in Morocco

In a significant political development, the Party of Authenticity and Modernity (PAM), which emerged victorious in the recent legislative elections in Morocco, has announced the formation of a coalition comprising four political parties to establish a new government. This coalition will be led by Fatima Zahra Mansouri, marking a historic milestone as she becomes the first woman to hold such a position in the country's history. Alongside PAM, the coalition includes the Independence Party, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces, and the Progress and Socialism Party. Notably, the National Rally of Independents, which previously led the outgoing government and secured second place in the September 23 elections, has opted to join the opposition.

The newly formed coalition commands a substantial representation in the House of Representatives, holding 207 out of the 395 seats, thus paving the way for a return of both the Socialist Union and the Progress and Socialism Party to the government after five years in parliamentary opposition. In an official statement, PAM emphasized that the four parties involved will propose candidates for ministerial positions, emphasizing the need for individuals who possess competence, political acumen, integrity, and uprightness. The aim is to create a cohesive and robust government that is capable of effectively implementing the upcoming governmental program, which is expected to be prepared promptly.

As per tradition, the members of the government will be appointed by King Mohammed VI, based on the recommendations put forth by Mansouri. Historically, ministers overseeing strategic sectors such as interior, foreign affairs, and Islamic guidance have often been appointed from outside the political parties. The incoming government is set to face numerous challenges, including addressing youth unemployment, a pressing issue that was highlighted by the notably low voter turnout among young people in the recent elections. Furthermore, it will need to tackle the social inequalities that persist across various regions of the kingdom.
