The king also remarked on the robust friendship and loyalty that has characterized Morocco-U.S. relations, particularly during Trump's two terms in office.
The monarch described the 1,055-kilometer (approximately 655 miles) highway as a "strategic axis" that connects the northern and southern regions of Morocco, with Morocco referring to Western Sahara as its "southern provinces." This region, once a Spanish colony, has been embroiled in conflict for over five decades, making it one of Africa's longest-standing disputes. The United Nations has consistently advocated for a resolution, including the possibility of a referendum, yet the indigenous population has never been afforded the opportunity to determine its own future.
The African Union, on the other hand, recognizes the independence of Western Sahara, while European nations have traditionally maintained a neutral stance. Recently, however, some countries like the UK and Spain have shown support for Morocco's proposal to grant autonomy to Western Sahara, while stopping short of endorsing full independence.
