Morocco's Rise in Technological Innovation
Morocco is establishing itself on the technological and creative innovation map of Africa by hosting the "Africa Week and AI Creativity Awards" in Marrakech, set to take place from April 6 to 9, 2026. This event marks the first international film festival on the continent dedicated entirely to artificial intelligence technologies. It embodies an ambitious initiative reflecting a growing trend towards investing in digital transformations to develop cultural and creative industries.
The festival has already garnered significant attention, with over 1,300 films submitted from around the globe, indicating a clear rise in international interest in this emerging field. Organized by IA’M CreAl in partnership with the Federation of Information Technology, Telecommunications, and Outsourcing Services, the event transcends a mere artistic display, serving as a strategic platform that melds creativity with technology, facilitating an exchange of experiences between cinema professionals and AI experts.
Empowering a New Generation of Creatives
In this context, Huda Lazaar, the founder and CEO of the organizing company, emphasized that creative artificial intelligence does not diminish the role of traditional cinema; rather, it opens new horizons and reshapes content production methods. She highlighted that the current challenge lies in preparing a new generation of creators capable of blending artistic sensibilities with technological skills, enabling them to compete on a global scale, especially amidst the rapid transformations occurring in this sector.
This edition of the festival implemented precise international standards for selecting works, featuring a jury composed of prominent names from the cinema and technology sectors, which added a global dimension and enhanced the event's credibility. Activities were spread across several renowned venues in Marrakech, including a showcase of an African art project using video mapping produced by artificial intelligence at the residence of the French consul, and film screenings at the French Institute followed by intellectual discussions on the future of digital creativity.
On the academic front, Cadi Ayyad University hosted a hackathon that brought together dozens of students who successfully produced short films using AI tools, showcasing the vast potential this field offers to the youth. This festival also served as the launchpad for the "CreAl Talent Program," the first organized initiative aimed at training and qualifying talents in the realm of creative artificial intelligence, developed through a strategic partnership with a leading expert in the field.
This program focuses on a comprehensive approach that combines theoretical and practical training while providing access to digital tools, alongside pedagogical support, with ambitions to expand its reach to educational institutions across Morocco and eventually throughout Africa.
The event was notably supported by institutional backing, with the presence of various Moroccan and French government officials, clearly illustrating the dynamic cooperation between the two nations in technology and innovation, thereby reinforcing Morocco's status as a regional partner in developing the digital economy.
