Morocco Introduces New Regulatory Framework for Inland Fishing

Morocco's New Inland Fishing Regulations

In a significant move to enhance the sustainability and management of its aquatic resources, the Moroccan government has recently adopted a new regulatory framework concerning inland fishing. This initiative, encapsulated in the recently passed decree No. 2.23.968, was presented by the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development, and Water and Forests during the latest governmental council meeting. The regulations aim to provide a more structured approach to fishing in rivers, natural lakes, and dam reservoirs, following reforms introduced by Law No. 130.12, which amended the provisions set forth in the 1922 dahir.

The newly established guidelines delineate specific rules applicable to various forms of fishing, including commercial, scientific, educational, and recreational activities. One of the key features of the decree is the requirement for the registration of fishing vessels, which will facilitate better monitoring of fishing practices and capture data. Furthermore, the framework emphasizes the critical role of voluntary guards from local associations in safeguarding aquatic resources and combating illegal fishing practices, thus ensuring a balanced ecosystem and promoting responsible fishing.
