Morocco Launches 305 MW Noor Atlas Solar Program to Enhance Renewable Energy Capacity

Morocco is making significant strides in enhancing its renewable energy capabilities with the recent inauguration of the Noor Atlas solar photovoltaic program, which boasts an impressive capacity of 305 megawatts (MW). On March 9, 2026, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (Masen) and the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) formalized their commitment to this ambitious project by signing the Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). This pivotal moment coincided with the official commencement of construction, marking a new chapter in Morocco's clean energy journey.

The Noor Atlas initiative consists of six solar photovoltaic plants strategically located across various regions, including Ain Béni Mathar in Jerada, Boudnib in Errachidia, Bouanane in Figuig, Enjil in Boulemane, Tata, and Tan-Tan. Together, these plants are designed to generate a total of 305 MW of electricity, with operations expected to kick off by July 2027. This substantial contribution to the national energy grid will significantly bolster Morocco's clean energy objectives. Under an engineering, procurement, and construction framework, Masen will be responsible for the operations and maintenance of these solar facilities.

The funding for the Noor Atlas project is a testament to international collaboration, incorporating concessional loans from Germany’s KfW Development Bank and the European Investment Bank, along with commercial backing from the Bank of Africa. The construction phase is being executed by a consortium of Moroccan and European firms, a strategic partnership designed to facilitate the transfer of technical expertise, enhance the national industrial ecosystem, and promote job creation in the regions hosting these solar plants.

This project not only reflects Morocco's commitment to renewable energy but also serves as a high-profile investment opportunity within the country's burgeoning renewable sector. By reinforcing its standing as a regional leader in solar energy, Morocco is poised to stimulate industrial and economic development across various provinces, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future.
