Morocco Leads African Nations in Building a Strong Continental Democracy

Morocco's Commitment to Democratic Development in Africa

Under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Morocco is paving the way for African nations to establish a robust continental democracy, grounded in transparent electoral practices, as highlighted by Bankole Adeoye, the African Union (AU) Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, during a press conference in Rabat. This announcement coincided with the 5th edition of the AU's training program for electoral observers, where Adeoye emphasized Morocco's role over the past five years in showcasing effective democratic practices across the continent. He underscored the significance of conducting credible and transparent elections in alignment with the AU's Agenda 2063, which aims to transform Africa into a global powerhouse.

The African Union is poised to initiate specialized training missions that will encompass the observation of pre-electoral, electoral, and post-electoral phases in various countries throughout the continent. Adeoye noted that this program is set to involve 87 potential electoral observers from multiple African states, contributing to a continental initiative designed to bolster the credibility and transparency of electoral processes across Africa.

Enhancing Democratic Practices Through Collaboration

In this context, Adeoye revealed that the AU is continuously working to refine this program by co-creating an African Election Observatory, which will bring together trained experts in the field. Additionally, plans are underway to establish an African Democracy Index that aims to provide reliable data for media outlets and digital platforms, allowing for better anticipation of challenges posed by new technologies and artificial intelligence. He also mentioned a forthcoming collaboration with the Policy Center for the New South in Morocco to explore issues surrounding the digitalization of democracy, artificial intelligence, and new technologies, alongside enhancing youth participation in political life.

Moreover, Adeoye discussed his recent conversations with Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Residents Abroad, regarding the promotion of peace, stability, and democracy across the continent, as well as other mutually significant issues. He reaffirmed the AU's unwavering commitment to peace and democracy in Africa, highlighting the vital roles played by youth, women, and civil society as essential defenders of democracy.
