Morocco Leads North Africa with $5 Million Donation to Gavi for Vaccine Access

In a significant step for global health, Morocco has formalized a $5 million donation agreement with the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (Gavi) in a ceremony held in Casablanca. By doing so, Morocco has distinguished itself as the first nation in North Africa to provide direct financial assistance to Gavi, an organization dedicated to enhancing vaccine access and curtailing child mortality rates across the globe. This donation not only fulfills a commitment made by the Moroccan government in 2025 but also marks the kingdom's entry into an elite group of donor countries supporting the pivotal work of Gavi.

Morocco's Minister of Economy and Finance, Nadia Fettah Alaoui, emphasized the importance of this contribution, stating that it represents an extension of the fruitful collaboration between Morocco and Gavi. She highlighted the country’s unwavering dedication to bolstering international initiatives aimed at ensuring equitable and sustainable vaccination access, particularly for the most vulnerable populations. This initiative is part of Morocco's broader strategy to enhance its influence in global health governance and to establish more resilient health systems capable of adeptly responding to future health crises.

In conjunction with its financial contributions, Morocco's initiative aligns with the objectives of the GITEX Future Health Africa platform, aimed at fostering cooperation and mobilization around pressing global health challenges. The Moroccan government envisions this initiative as part of a larger strategic policy that prioritizes human capital and advocates for universal access to vaccines as a fundamental human right. Mohammed Tarik Bchir, the director of the Treasury and External Finance, reiterated this sentiment, stating that the commitment resonates with Gavi’s 2021–2030 strategy, which is centered on expanding vaccine access, enhancing vaccine equity, and ensuring sustainable financing.

Since its inception in 2000, Gavi has made substantial strides in global health, managing to vaccinate over 1.2 billion children and preventing more than 20.6 million deaths, thereby significantly reducing child mortality rates in numerous countries. Morocco's proactive approach to supporting Gavi not only underscores its commitment to public health but also sets a precedent for other nations in the region to follow suit.
