Morocco Participates in the 57th Session of the UN Statistical Commission in New York

Morocco's Role in the 57th UN Statistical Commission Session

Morocco, represented by a delegation from the High Commission for Planning, has actively participated in the 57th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission, held in New York from March 3 to 6, 2026. This commission, which operates under the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, is recognized as the highest international body dedicated to the study and adoption of statistical methodologies and standards on a global scale, playing a crucial role in enhancing the governance of the international statistical system.

The Moroccan delegation was led by Osama Marseili, the Director of Statistics at the High Commission for Planning. During this session, the delegation engaged in various official meetings and parallel activities organized alongside the event. Notably, the delegation attended two preparatory seminars that focused on the topics of artificial intelligence and Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Marseili emphasized that this year's participation is particularly significant, as Morocco has recently joined the commission as a member for the period spanning 2026 to 2029. For the first time, Morocco has also been elected as a member of the commission's bureau, serving in the role of rapporteur. The Moroccan delegation made several interventions addressing pivotal issues on the international statistical agenda, including social and demographic statistics, national accounting, economic and environmental accounting, and governance statistics.

This involvement showcases Morocco's commitment to the ongoing development of a modern and integrated statistical system, along with national initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of statistical data and expanding its application in public policy formulation and evaluation. Additionally, Morocco provided a statement on behalf of the African group concerning several agenda items of the session, particularly those related to the indicators and data essential for monitoring the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, as well as the enhancement of statistical capacities and international statistical classifications.

In a similar vein, Morocco presented another statement on behalf of the Arab member states in the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), addressing the issues of social and demographic statistics and national accounting.

During the parallel activities of this session, the Moroccan delegation showcased the national experience in integrating linguistic issues within population and housing statistics, alongside the methodologies employed for the General Population and Housing Census planned for 2024. This occasion also served as a platform to share Morocco's experience in collaboration between the High Commission for Planning and the Danish Statistical Institute, particularly regarding best practices arising from long-term statistical cooperation partnerships.

The head of the delegation affirmed that participation in the UN Statistical Commission's activities enables Morocco to strengthen its presence within the international statistical system, showcase its national expertise, and reinforce cooperative relationships with regional and international partners in the field of statistics.
