Morocco Reaffirms International Support for Its Autonomy Proposal
During a significant session at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Morocco took a stand on behalf of a coalition of 40 nations endorsing its sovereignty over the Sahara region and its autonomy proposal as a sustainable resolution to the ongoing regional conflict. This affirmation occurred on the second day of the 63rd session, emphasizing that the Sahara issue is fundamentally political and falls under the jurisdiction of the UN Security Council. The statement presented by Morocco highlighted the genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as a "realistic solution" and reiterated support for Resolution 2797, passed on October 31, 2025, along with the reactivation of the UN-led political process.
Omar Zniber, Morocco’s permanent representative in Geneva, stressed the importance of ensuring that discussions among states, the Human Rights Council, and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights remain free from any political manipulation. The support from the 40 nations also acknowledged Morocco's ongoing efforts to enhance and refine its autonomy proposal, along with its commitment to facilitating the return and reintegration of populations from the Tindouf camps, ensuring equality with other Moroccan citizens and under international guarantees.
