Morocco Gains Backing from 40 Nations for Sovereignty over Southern Regions
In a significant diplomatic move, Omar Zeniber, Morocco's permanent ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, reaffirmed the kingdom's sovereignty over its southern territories during the second day of the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council. Representing a coalition of 40 countries that endorse Morocco's stance, Zeniber emphasized the necessity of safeguarding the interactions between nations and the Human Rights Council from any political exploitation. This assertion comes amidst ongoing discussions surrounding the protracted political dispute over Western Sahara, where Morocco advocates for a genuine autonomy plan under its sovereignty as the most realistic and viable resolution.
Zeniber elaborated on the nature of the Sahara issue, clarifying that it is a political conflict handled by the UN Security Council, which acknowledges that genuine autonomy can be a feasible outcome. He revealed that the group supports the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, 2025, aimed at revitalizing political processes through negotiations involving the four parties specified in the resolution. This initiative is centered around Morocco's autonomy proposal, with the ultimate goal of reaching a politically acceptable and final solution to the ongoing dispute.
Furthermore, Zeniber noted the coalition’s appreciation for Morocco’s recent updates on its autonomy plan and its commitment to ensuring the return and integration of residents from the Tindouf camps based on equality among all Moroccan citizens, in accordance with recognized international guarantees and practices in this realm. He concluded by asserting that resolving this conflict would embody the aspirations of both Arab and African peoples towards development, a goal that Morocco is steadfastly pursuing through earnest and ongoing efforts.
