Morocco Secures Three-Month Fuel Supply Amid Global Energy Concerns

Stable Fuel Supply and Government Response

In a recent announcement, Morocco's Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Laila Benali, confirmed that the nation has secured a three-month supply of fuel, ensuring a stable energy stock amidst global disruptions. The minister emphasized that the country's fuel supply remains robust, with diesel reserves sufficient to meet national consumption for approximately 47 days, while gasoline stock extends beyond 49 days. This stability is crucial as Morocco, like many nations, faces challenges stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Benali referenced recent reports from the International Energy Agency (IEA) highlighting that the current situation could surpass the impacts of past energy crises experienced in 1970, 1979, and 2002. She pointed out that the instability in the region is notably affecting strategic maritime routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery through which over 20% of global oil flows, alongside substantial volumes of natural gas and other essential industrial inputs necessary for sectors such as pharmaceuticals and food production.

Financial Support Measures for Citizens

As the situation evolves, the Moroccan government is proactively addressing the pressures on its economy by mobilizing a financial support package of approximately MAD 1.6 billion aimed at helping citizens maintain their purchasing power and stabilizing essential sectors. This package includes MAD 600 million allocated to subsidies for butane gas, MAD 400 million to support the electricity sector, and around MAD 648 million each month designated for fuel compensations for transport professionals, providing MAD 3 per liter of fuel. Despite rising costs, the minister assured that electricity tariffs would remain stable, backed by ongoing public financial support estimated at around MAD 400 million monthly.

Benali underscored that Morocco's energy landscape remains comparatively stable thanks to coordinated planning and a diverse range of sourcing strategies. The country has successfully established relationships with various energy suppliers, including those from the United States, South America, and several European nations, which further contributes to its energy security.
