Transition to Milder Conditions in Morocco

In a welcome shift from the sweltering heat that characterized the early days of October, Morocco is poised to experience a gradual decline in temperatures across most regions in the coming days. According to Houcine Youabed from the General Directorate of Meteorology, this change will initiate in the northern and central parts of the country, as well as the Atlantic plains, before extending further as the week advances. However, some southern and inland areas may still experience relatively high temperatures.

Forecast and Weather Patterns

Youabed indicated that current meteorological indicators point to a milder weather pattern compared to the intense heat observed at the beginning of the month. The forecast includes continued chances of thunderstorms in various regions, although it remains too soon to determine if October overall will be cooler or wetter than usual. Alongside the cooling temperatures, thunderstorms are particularly anticipated in the southern provinces, the Atlas Mountains, and the Rif region, where heavy showers and strong gusts may occur.

On Monday, maximum temperatures are expected to still hover between 36°C and 41°C in the northern Saharan provinces, central plains, and inland Souss. Thunderstorms are likely in the southern provinces, with lighter storms possible in the Middle Atlas and Rif regions, while light rain or isolated storms could affect other areas in the north, center, east, and High Atlas. As the week progresses, particularly on Tuesday, showers are predicted to spread to the High and Middle Atlas, the Rif mountains, and the Saïss region, as well as the northern and central plains. Temperatures are set to decline, especially in the southern regions, the plains west of the Atlas, and the Mediterranean area.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, additional thunderstorms are expected over the Atlas and southern Saharan provinces, coupled with a noticeable cooling trend in the northern and central parts of the country. From Thursday through the following Wednesday, a significant drop in temperatures is anticipated across most regions, alongside cloudy spells in northern and central areas, with moderate to strong winds expected around Tangier and the Saharan provinces.

Youabed elaborated on the interplay between heat and thunderstorms during this transitional season, noting that these phenomena can occur simultaneously due to variations in air mass distribution and weather systems impacting the nation. Warm air from the south can intersect with cooler air aloft, creating ideal conditions for thunderstorms to develop.
