Morocco's Strategic Military Advancement with HIMARS Systems
A recent report from "Zona Militar," renowned for its military and security analysis, emphasizes Morocco's impending acquisition of 18 HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) units through the U.S. military sales program for the fiscal year 2027. This development marks a significant milestone in the modernization of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, particularly in the realms of precision firepower and deep strike capabilities. The HIMARS system is poised to broaden the operational scope of the Moroccan military, enabling it to engage targets at considerable distances with exceptional accuracy. These targets may include command centers, troop concentrations, logistical facilities, air defense systems, and military infrastructure, all while maintaining a safe distance from direct confrontation.
The report highlights that a key feature of the HIMARS system lies in its versatility with munitions; each launcher can accommodate a single ATACMS missile or six GMLRS rockets. The package approved by the U.S. for Morocco also consists of 40 M57 ATACMS missiles, 36 GMLRS Unitary M31A2 rockets, 36 GMLRS M30A2 alternative warheads, nine M1152A1 vehicles, 18 field artillery tactical data systems (IFATDS), logistical vehicles, maintenance and repair vehicles, communication equipment, and spare parts. Additionally, the military value of the HIMARS is not solely defined by its range but also by its combination of accuracy, mobility, and rapid repositioning capabilities, which allow for swift firing and relocation, thus minimizing the exposure time to enemy detection and counter-battery fire.
Furthermore, this new system will complement Morocco’s existing arsenal, which already includes other long-range artillery systems. For several years, Morocco has operated the Chinese PHL-03/AR2 system and has integrated the Israeli PULS system, which is reported to be fully operational within the Moroccan military framework. The Moroccan armed forces are thus cultivating a diverse arsenal that combines a Chinese platform focused on fire density, an Israeli system known for its precision, and soon, the American HIMARS capable of engaging targets up to 300 kilometers away. Beyond merely increasing firepower, the diversity in suppliers, munitions, and operational duration enhances Morocco's military capabilities.
Additionally, there are indications that Morocco may also acquire the "LORA" system developed by Israeli Aerospace Industries, which features a precision ground-to-ground ballistic missile with a maximum range of 430 kilometers. This company has announced participation in the upcoming Marrakech Airshow to foster industrial cooperation and technology transfer, suggesting a relationship that transcends simple commercial transactions. The potential integration of the LORA missile could significantly extend the depth strike radius of the Moroccan armed forces, surpassing the 300 kilometers provided by the American ATACMS and thereby adding a unique ballistic capability for deep strike operations. This advancement would enable Morocco to impose greater costs and losses on any potential adversary from further distances, compelling Spain to allocate more resources for the protection of its critical infrastructure in the southern Mediterranean region.
