Continuity in Moroccan Football Leadership
The Moroccan Football Federation has decided to maintain continuity in its coaching staff by retaining Mohamed Ouahbi as the head coach of the national team, despite the team's recent exit from the World Cup quarter-finals. This decision was announced by Abdessalam Belegchour, a federation official, who communicated the resolution during a meeting of the executive committee, as shared on the social media platform X. Morocco's national team faced a setback in the quarter-finals, succumbing to France with a score of 0-2, which led to critical feedback regarding Ouahbi's coaching performance.
In response to the criticism, Belegchour emphasized that the committee reaffirmed their trust in Ouahbi during the meeting, allowing him to continue his work in the upcoming period. The 49-year-old coach only assumed the role in early March, taking over from Walid Regragui. Prior to this, he had achieved notable success by leading Morocco’s U20 team to a World Cup title last year.
Under Ouahbi’s leadership, the “Atlas Lions” secured a commendable second place in their group during the tournament held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, finishing just behind Brazil. Their journey included impressive victories in the knockout stages, where they defeated the Netherlands in the round of 16 and Canada in the quarter-finals. Notably, Morocco made history in 2022 by becoming the first African nation to reach the World Cup semi-finals, marking a significant achievement in the nation’s football history.
