Morocco's Firm Stance Against Attacks on UAE's Nuclear Security
On June 6, 2026, Morocco strongly condemned the recent drone attacks against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), particularly focusing on an incident that targeted the electrical generator of the Barakah nuclear power plant in Abu Dhabi. This condemnation was articulated by Morocco's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Azzeddine Farhane, during an extraordinary session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors. The session convened at the request of Arab member states, including Morocco, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, in response to the security threats posed by the attack on the Barakah facility, which jeopardized the nuclear safety of the UAE.
During this significant session, which also featured the presence of IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, Ambassador Farhane reaffirmed Morocco's unwavering solidarity with the UAE and its legitimate right to defend its security, sovereignty, and the safety of its citizens and residents. He reiterated the firm positions expressed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI regarding the aggressions faced by the UAE since the onset of the current regional conflict.
Support for UAE's Nuclear Safety Measures
Furthermore, the ambassador commended the swift and transparent information provided by UAE authorities to the IAEA concerning the consequences of the attack, as well as the effective measures taken to mitigate its impact. These included maintaining radiation levels around the Barakah nuclear plant within normal limits, ensuring public safety and confidence in nuclear operations. Farhane expressed Morocco's appreciation for the ongoing efforts by UAE authorities to ensure the safe, secure, and peaceful operation of the Barakah facility, which is under IAEA safeguards and adheres to the highest international standards.
He also highlighted the continuous coordination between the IAEA and the relevant Emirati authorities. The ambassador emphasized that the Barakah nuclear power plant was designed, constructed, and operated in accordance with the strictest international standards, under the supervision of the UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation and in compliance with safety standards set by the IAEA. Morocco supports the ongoing efforts of the IAEA and its Director General in monitoring and assessing developments related to nuclear safety, security, and safeguards in member states.
