In a groundbreaking achievement, a Moroccan medical group has unveiled the largest and first comprehensive scientific study on robot-assisted prostate surgery in Africa. Conducted by the esteemed Oncorad Group, this pivotal research was published in the Journal of Robotic Surgery on July 20, revealing the outcomes of surgeries performed on 134 patients at the Littoral Clinic Ain Diab in Casablanca, during the clinic's inaugural year utilizing the advanced Toumai robotic surgical system. Impressive Outcomes and Global Comparisons

The cohort of patients involved in this study had an average age of 67 years, with surgeons reporting minimal blood loss averaging just 66 milliliters. Notably, there were no fatalities among the participants, and the average hospital stay post-surgery was only 1.4 days. The study indicated a positive surgical margin rate of 11%, which is critical in assessing whether any cancerous tissues remained after the procedure. Furthermore, the rate of urinary continence reached an impressive 88% one year following surgery, showcasing the effectiveness of the robotic approach. Oncorad Group has emphasized that these results are comparable to those achieved by the most established robotic surgical platforms globally, marking this research as a significant milestone in African medical history.

This achievement builds upon the pioneering work of Dr. Youness Ahallal, who led the first robotic surgery in Africa outside of South Africa in May 2024, utilizing the Toumai system, which was the first of its kind employed outside China. The clinic has since successfully performed over 300 robot-assisted radical prostatectomies, further solidifying its status as a leader in this advanced medical field.
