Morocco's Security Forces Act to Prevent Mass Migration Attempt
On Tuesday, Moroccan security forces successfully thwarted an irregular attempt by approximately 150 migrants to enter through the Benzú border near Ceuta. According to police sources, the Moroccan gendarmerie intervened well ahead of the border crossing to prevent these individuals from massing into Spanish territory. In response to this potential crisis, Spain's Ministry of the Interior has intensified border surveillance, particularly in light of social media calls for a new assault linked to the upcoming legislative elections in Morocco.
Following the considerable influx of over 80,000 migrants through the Tarajal border on July 30 and 31, authorities led by Fernando Grande-Marlaska have opted for a cautious approach, deploying a substantial force comprising more than 300 riot police officers—180 national police and around 150 civil guards. These agents stand ready to respond should the situation at the border escalate or if Morocco fails to cooperate effectively. However, police sources deem such scenarios unlikely, as both nations are currently collaborating to prevent another migratory surge.
The social media calls for mass migration have resurfaced since the previous alert on August 15, gaining traction among users on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, where participation numbers have reportedly reached up to 90,000. Nevertheless, such figures do not necessarily indicate that these individuals will mobilize from Moroccan cities bordering Spain.
