Moroccan Military Industry to Deliver Armored Vehicle Turrets by March 2027
In a significant development for the Moroccan defense sector, the Moroccan Military Industry (MMI) is set to commence the delivery of armored vehicle turrets to the Moroccan army in March 2027. This announcement was made by MMI's general manager during the Marrakech Air Show, a notable event in the defense industry calendar. Reports suggest that MMI maintains a close relationship with Israel's Elbit Systems, leveraging its advanced technology to enhance Morocco's military capabilities. While MMI has labeled itself as a Moroccan defense firm, the exact nature of its collaboration with Elbit remains somewhat ambiguous, with no detailed disclosures provided.
Expanding Domestic Arms Production and Export Potential
As part of its initiative to develop a robust domestic arms industry and boost exports, MMI has secured an agreement with Morocco's defense administration to produce turrets specifically for 8x8 armored vehicles that are assembled locally by India's Tata. In addition to the turrets, the company will also manufacture the associated ammunition. Currently, MMI operates a weapons-systems facility situated in the Midparc industrial zone near Casablanca and is in the process of establishing a second manufacturing plant in Sidi Yahya, located north of Rabat, aimed at producing medium- and large-caliber ammunition.
In an intriguing twist, MMI is also working on an anti-drone variant of its turret, responding to the growing global demand for cost-effective solutions to counter aerial threats posed by unmanned drones. The general manager emphasized the financial efficiency of their approach, stating, "The threat is very cheap... defense systems are more expensive." This innovative anti-drone system will utilize a small radar to detect incoming drones, triggering an explosion that disperses tungsten fragments to effectively neutralize the airborne target. Additionally, MMI is exploring the development of a self-propelled mortar system suitable for vehicle mounting.
MMI has ambitious plans to leverage Morocco as a strategic platform for defense exports, hinting at potential future sales to a European NATO nation, albeit without disclosing specific details about prospective customers. Notably, the company's workforce is predominantly Moroccan, with 99% of its staff, including engineers, hailing from the local population.
