Morocco Triumphs in Appeal Against AFCON 2025 Sanctions, CAF to Reassess Disciplinary Actions

Morocco's Successful Appeal Over AFCON 2025 Final Controversy

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has achieved a significant victory by winning its appeal regarding the disciplinary sanctions imposed after the contentious incidents during the final match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This ruling allows for a renewed examination of the case by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), as reported by bsnsports.com.ng.

The final, which took place on January 18 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, witnessed a controversial late penalty decision that led to a temporary halt in play. Following the match, which Senegal won with a late goal from Pape Gueye, CAF announced disciplinary measures on January 29 in response to the events that unfolded. However, these sanctions ignited a debate among observers, many of whom argued that the penalties were disproportionately lenient for Senegal while being excessively harsh on Morocco.

Review of Disciplinary Actions and Future Hearings

In the wake of the initial ruling, Senegal's coach, Pape Bouna Thiaw, received a five-match suspension from CAF competitions along with a substantial fine of $100,000. Additionally, players Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaïla Sarr faced two-match bans for unsporting conduct towards the match officials. The Senegalese Football Federation was also penalized with fines totaling $615,000, primarily due to the behavior of its supporters and technical staff.

On the Moroccan side, Achraf Hakimi was handed a two-match suspension, inclusive of one suspended match, for unsporting behavior, while Ismaël Saibari received a three-match ban along with a fine of $100,000. The FRMF itself faced fines amounting to $200,000 due to the actions of ball boys, $100,000 for the intrusion of players and staff into the VAR area, and an additional $15,000 for reports of laser pointers being utilized by some fans.

The reopening of this case by CAF has the potential to alter the original sanctions, and the outcome of the new disciplinary hearing could lead to significant changes in the penalties imposed on both teams involved in this high-stakes match.
