Significant Growth in Remittances and Foreign Direct Investments
In a remarkable development, remittances sent by Moroccans living abroad (MRE) have surged to an impressive total of 74.79 billion Moroccan Dirhams (MAD), equivalent to approximately 6.92 billion Euros, during the first seven months of 2026. According to the Moroccan Office of Foreign Exchange (Office des Changes) in its July 2026 monthly report, this figure marks an increase of 8.1 percent, or 5.62 billion MAD, compared to the same period last year. This upward trajectory in financial flows from expatriates continues to reflect a positive trend that has persisted for several years. For context, remittances totaled 60.01 billion MAD between January and July 2022, before rising to 65.97 billion MAD in 2023 and 69.50 billion MAD in 2024, ultimately reaching 69.17 billion MAD during the corresponding period in 2025. The latest data indicates that the current remittance figure not only surpasses the previous year’s levels but also exceeds all comparable periods in prior years. Notably, MAGHREB-POST.de had previously reported on this consistent increase in the first quarter of the year, when remittances approached 40 billion MAD by the end of April.
The report also highlights significant growth in net inflows of foreign direct investments (FDI) in Morocco, which increased by 58.5 percent, reaching 29.47 billion MAD. The Office of Foreign Exchange documented revenues from foreign direct investments amounting to 39.11 billion MAD between January and July 2026, a 6.3 percent increase from 36.79 billion MAD reported at the end of July 2025. In stark contrast, investment-related expenditures during the same time frame saw a drastic decline, plummeting by 47.0 percent from 18.19 billion MAD the previous year to just 9.64 billion MAD. This significant reduction in outflows has contributed to the notable rise in net inflows of foreign direct investments.
Changing Patterns in Overseas Moroccan Investments
Additionally, preliminary data from the Office of Foreign Exchange indicates a shift in the investment activities of Moroccan investors abroad. Expenditures on Moroccan direct investments outside the country surged by 53.7 percent, totaling 17.03 billion MAD from January to July 2026, compared to 11.08 billion MAD in the same period last year. Concurrently, revenues from divestments by Moroccan entities abroad rose by 22.2 percent, climbing from 8.32 billion MAD to 10.16 billion MAD. The net investment flow stood at +6.87 billion MAD, representing an increase of 4.10 billion MAD compared to the previous year's corresponding period, which recorded +2.77 billion MAD. The Office of Foreign Exchange emphasizes that the figures published are preliminary and that the dynamics of foreign currency inflows in the remaining months of the year will be the subject of upcoming monthly reports from the authority.
