Morocco's Friendly Match Against El Salvador Called Off
The much-anticipated friendly match between Morocco and El Salvador, which was part of the preparations for the 2026 World Cup, has been unexpectedly canceled. This decision comes after extensive negotiations between the two football federations, which ultimately failed to reach an agreement on the logistics surrounding the event. Initially, the Salvadoran Football Federation (FESFUT) announced that the match would take place on June 3 at the Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, without formal confirmation from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF). The Moroccan federation quickly raised concerns regarding their inability to assemble the entire squad on the scheduled date.
In a letter sent to FESFUT, the FRMF cited various factors impacting their availability, including uncertainties in the conclusion of several European and Asian leagues, scheduling conflicts, and player injuries. Faced with these challenges, Morocco proposed an alternative: relocating the match to Morocco on June 2 while covering all travel and accommodation expenses for the Salvadoran team. This offer was intended as a compromise to ensure the match could proceed under more favorable conditions.
However, FESFUT rejected this proposal, with its president, Yamil Bukele, citing FIFA regulations that prohibit a national team from playing matches on two different continents within the same international window. El Salvador is already set to face Qatar in Los Angeles on June 6, making an additional trip to Morocco logistically unfeasible.
