Positive Growth Forecast for Moroccan Agriculture in 2026
In a promising turn of events for Morocco's agricultural landscape, the government anticipates a remarkable 15% growth in the sector for the year 2026. This optimistic forecast comes after several years of severe drought conditions, which had significantly hampered agricultural activities. The resurgence of rainfall, coupled with supportive measures for producers, is expected to drive this growth, as confirmed by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch on March 12, 2026. The prime minister stated, "For 2026, forecasts indicate that the national economy will continue its recovery, marking the fifth consecutive year of growth. This recovery is bolstered by strong performance in non-agricultural sectors and exceptional dynamics within agriculture, which is projected to rebound by approximately 15% this year."
Research from Moroccan meteorological institutions highlights that this encouraging trend follows nearly seven years of drought. Official data reveals that the total precipitation from September 1, 2025, to March 11, 2026, reached 462 mm, which is a substantial 134% increase compared to 2025 and 56% above the average for the past three decades. If these forecasts materialize, it would mark the best harvest since the 2020-2021 season, which produced 10.3 million tons.
Strengthening Economic Growth Through Agriculture
According to Prime Minister Akhannouch, this growth trajectory in agriculture is poised to support the broader economic recovery in Morocco, where agriculture remains a vital pillar, contributing approximately 13 to 15% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and accounting for nearly 40% of employment—an impressive 70% in rural areas. "The Kingdom will enhance the profitability of value chains, whether in cereals, staple crops, or emerging sectors. Increased productivity opens promising avenues for enhancing agriculture's contribution to economic growth and solidifying its crucial role in ensuring food security," the Prime Minister emphasized.
