Morocco's Ambitious Airport Modernization Plan Aims for 80 Million Passengers by 2030

Transforming Morocco's Airport Infrastructure for Future Growth

Morocco is undertaking a significant modernization of its airport infrastructure to accommodate an anticipated surge in air traffic and enhance the country's appeal as a travel destination. According to statements reported by L'Economiste, Abdessamad Kayouh, the Minister of Transport and Logistics, announced that the airport capacity is set to double from 40 million to 80 million passengers within the coming years. This ambitious expansion will impact the major airports, particularly those in Casablanca, Marrakech, Tangier, Agadir, Fez, and Rabat-Salé. "The real challenge now is to complete these projects and have them operational before the summer of 2030," he emphasized.

The modernization efforts include upgrading terminals to enhance passenger experience, updating critical infrastructure, and improving air navigation equipment in line with the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Additionally, there will be an accelerated push towards digitalizing the travel process. The overarching aim is to harmonize performance, safety, and sustainability, ultimately constructing resilient airports that can meet the future challenges of air transport. This endeavor is part of the national roadmap "Airports 2030," which seeks to anticipate substantial traffic growth and prepare for major international events, notably the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Enhancing Connectivity and Sustainability in Air Travel

Casablanca, the nerve center of Morocco's air network, is attracting the majority of the investment. "The most significant project is the construction of the new terminal at Mohammed V Airport, considered the largest airport project in the country," explained the Minister. Concurrently, the airports in Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, Rabat-Salé, and Fez are undergoing expansion or renovation projects to accommodate the increasing traffic, improve service quality, and boost the attractiveness of these regions.

Improving connectivity is another fundamental pillar of this strategy. Nationally, efforts are focused on strengthening domestic air connections to better link the regions with each other and with Casablanca's hub. Internationally, Morocco is adopting a targeted approach towards priority markets, particularly Europe, Africa, North America, and the Middle East. This strategy involves opening new routes, strengthening and liberalizing air agreements, and consolidating the country's role as a connection platform between multiple continents. "The development of Casablanca's hub is critical, as it allows us to better capture international flows and strengthen Morocco's position as a gateway to Africa," stated Abdessamad Kayouh.

Moreover, ecological transition also takes precedence in this modernization effort. "It is integrated into a comprehensive and cross-cutting approach," the minister highlighted. The challenge lies in "developing mobility while significantly reducing the environmental impact of the sector." To achieve this, the ministry is concentrating on optimizing traffic flow, modernizing equipment, and introducing technological solutions aimed at reducing energy consumption and emissions. Furthermore, deeper transformations are underway, such as promoting sustainable transport modes, particularly rail and shared mobility solutions.
