Remarkable Growth of Moroccan Blueberries in Finland
Morocco has made significant strides in Finland's blueberry market, achieving unprecedented growth during the Marketing Year (MY) 2025/26, as reported by east-fruit.com. According to data from Finnish Customs analyzed by Global Trade Tracker, the country imported an impressive 657 tons of fresh blueberries from Morocco, with the total value exceeding €6 million between July 2025 and June 2026. This remarkable figure represents a staggering increase of 7.5 times compared to Morocco's total shipments over the previous five years, and it is 12.5 times greater than the record set in MY 2017/18.
The popularity of blueberries in Finland is on the rise, with import volumes increasing for the third consecutive year, effectively doubling during this period. For the first time, Finland's total blueberry imports exceeded 4,000 tons in MY 2025/26, marking a 62 percent increase from the previous year. In addition to Morocco, other countries like Spain, the Netherlands, and Chile also expanded their blueberry shipments, while Poland and South Africa experienced a decline in market share.
Strategic Timing and Market Positioning
Morocco's timing in exporting blueberries coincided perfectly with Finnish market demand. The surge in imports began in January with blueberries from Peru, Chile, and the Netherlands. By February, both Moroccan and Spanish blueberries entered the market, and by March, Morocco's market share had exceeded 32 percent. The peak of this growth occurred in May, when shipments reached a remarkable 180 tons. Factors such as high product quality, competitive pricing, and efficient logistics played a crucial role in enabling Morocco to increase its export volumes forty-fold compared to the previous year, establishing itself as the fastest-growing supplier in the market.
By the conclusion of MY 2025/26, Morocco had ascended to the position of the second-largest supplier of blueberries to Finland, holding a market share of 16.2 percent. This achievement signifies a major breakthrough for Moroccan exports, paving the way for further expansion into Northern European markets.
Furthermore, Morocco's success in Finland is part of a broader strategy of regional expansion. During the same marketing year, the country doubled its direct exports of tomatoes to Finland and emerged as the leading supplier of raspberries and blackberries to Norway. Collectively, these accomplishments highlight Morocco's growing influence as a key player in the Northern European fruit trade.
