Morocco's Bold Move: Six Nationalizations to Boost World Cup Aspirations

In a strategic and ambitious move, Morocco's national football team, known as the Atlas Lions, has recently nationalized six players born in Belgium and the Netherlands within a mere thirteen days. This initiative is part of their broader objective to make a significant impact at the 2030 FIFA World Cup, building on their recent success of reaching the semifinals in the Qatar 2022 World Cup. This effort to strengthen the national squad is reminiscent of the approach taken with Real Madrid's Brahim Díaz, showcasing Morocco's commitment to harnessing European talent to enhance their football prowess.

Among the newly nationalized players, four hail from the Netherlands while two are from Belgium. Notably, Rayane Bounida stands out as a key acquisition for the Atlas Lions. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has been making waves in the Dutch league, demonstrating remarkable technical skills, creativity, and immense potential, which have made him a vital player for his club. This season, Bounida has already contributed two goals and eight assists, earning him a call-up to represent Morocco in upcoming friendly matches against Ecuador and Paraguay.

Beyond these recent nationalizations, Morocco is also eyeing additional talent to bolster their squad. One of the most notable names is Thiago Pitarch, a prominent figure from 'La Fábrica' and a starting midfielder for Real Madrid in recent matches. At just 18 years old, he has already played in matches for Spain's under-19 national team, but there remains a possibility for him to switch allegiance to Morocco should he not debut with 'La Roja'. Meanwhile, Moroccan coach Mohamed Ouahbi is gearing up for the 2026 World Cup with an eye on nurturing new and promising talents.
