Formation of a New Coalition Government in Morocco

In a significant political development, Morocco's center-right party, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), which emerged as the frontrunner in the recent parliamentary elections, has announced the formation of a coalition government alongside three other political parties. This coalition includes two moderate socialist parties and the nationalist Istiqlal Party, collectively securing 207 seats in the parliament, surpassing the 198-seat threshold required for a majority. In a joint statement, the coalition emphasized its commitment to establishing a cohesive political majority that will lead to a strong government characterized by aligned political ideologies and a unified reform vision.

This coalition marks a historic moment as Moroccan King Mohammed VI appointed Fatima Zahra Mansouri as the head of the government, making her the first woman to hold this position in the kingdom's history. Mansouri has been tasked with forming the new government following her party's victory in the parliamentary elections held on September 23.

The Authenticity and Modernity Party was founded in 2008 by a close advisor to the king and has positioned itself as a balancing force against the Islamist Justice and Development Party, advocating for societal modernization. The newly formed government is expected to oversee the final stages of a substantial investment plan valued at $20 billion, in preparation for hosting the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

However, the government faces the pressing challenge of addressing youth-related issues such as employment, education, and healthcare, which were central to last year's Generation Z protests and the migration crisis in Ceuta during July. Despite these elections, no major shifts in Morocco's overarching political landscape are anticipated, as the constitutional monarchy allows the king to retain significant powers over foreign policy, defense, and other crucial issues.
