A government source in Rabat confirmed on Monday, as reported by the official news agency (MAP), that the Kingdom of Morocco has remained a "sovereign, loyal, and responsible" partner in the fight against irregular migration. Emphasizing that the management of migration is a "shared responsibility," the source highlighted that Morocco has always borne its fair share of the burden.
The source further asserted that "Morocco has never succumbed to pressure, nor has it acted under coercion or duress," underscoring that "commitment and responsibility have always been the primary drivers of our actions." In this regard, it was noted that migration is a "complex phenomenon that requires each party to take responsibility," with the assertion, "We fully accept our responsibilities."
Continuing, the government source pointed out that this commitment is reflected in "tangible results for all, even if some treat them as self-evident without recognizing the magnitude of the achievement that they represent." In this context, the source reminded that it is often overlooked that "if the western Mediterranean front has been the least problematic for Europe in recent years, it is not because it is not targeted by human trafficking networks, but rather because Morocco has effectively deployed significant resources—and continues to do so today."
The source emphasized that considerable human, technical, and financial resources have been mobilized for this purpose. Moreover, it noted that cooperation between Morocco and the Spanish government is considered "exemplary." According to statistics provided by the source, there were 74,000 attempts at irregular migration thwarted in 2025, and 79,000 attempts in 2024, totaling around 160,000 attempts over two years. It was also explained that 632 irregular migration networks were dismantled during 2024 and 2025, and more than 32,000 successful rescue operations at sea were carried out during the same period, with over 360,000 attempts at irregular migration thwarted in the past five years.
