In a significant counterterrorism operation, Morocco's security forces have successfully thwarted an imminent threat posed by a cell affiliated with the Islamic State in the Sahel region. The Central Bureau for Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) announced on Monday that ten suspects were apprehended during coordinated raids across multiple cities, including Agadir, Taroudant, Casablanca, Hajjeb, Tetouan, Fqih Ben Salah, and Safi. This proactive measure highlights the ongoing threat that jihadist groups present in the Sahel, particularly as affiliates of both Islamic State and Al-Qaeda have increased their activities in countries like Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the arrested individuals had pledged their allegiance to the Islamic State and were acting on direct instructions from the group's Sahel branch to execute attacks within Morocco. During the extensive searches carried out by authorities, a wide array of dangerous materials was uncovered. These included bladed weapons, military-style clothing, documents with detailed instructions for constructing explosive devices, digital data, and various chemical substances. Notably, investigators also discovered a modified vehicle believed to be intended for use in a suicide bombing or vehicle-ramming attack, emphasizing the seriousness of the threat posed by this group.
Additionally, the security forces recovered butane gas cylinders and pressure cookers, some of which were packed with nails and others wired for electrical connection, located in a warehouse utilized by the suspects. Such findings indicate a high level of preparation for potential attacks. According to BCIJ statistics, more than 130 Moroccan nationals have joined IS branches in Africa in recent years, underscoring the alarming trend of recruitment by these extremist factions. Since its inception in 2015, the BCIJ has dismantled numerous militant cells and arrested upwards of 1,000 suspected jihadists, demonstrating its commitment to safeguarding public security.
The most recent jihadist attack in Morocco occurred in 2023, when three individuals affiliated with the Islamic State tragically took the life of a Moroccan police officer in Casablanca. The ongoing vigilance and rapid response of Moroccan counterterrorism efforts remain crucial in preventing further violence and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
