A government source in Rabat confirmed on Monday, as reported by the state news agency (MAP), that the Kingdom of Morocco has consistently remained a "sovereign, loyal, and responsible partner" in the fight against irregular migration. The source emphasized that managing the migration issue is a "shared responsibility," while asserting that Morocco has always borne its fair share of the burden.
The same source highlighted that Morocco has never succumbed to pressure and has never acted out of coercion or under the threat of blackmail. It was further affirmed that "commitment and responsibility have always been the primary motivations behind our actions." In this context, the government source pointed out that migration is a "complex phenomenon that requires each party to take responsibility," and added, "We fully accept our responsibilities."
The government reiterated that this commitment is reflected in "tangible results for all," even though some may regard these outcomes as self-evident without recognizing the magnitude of the achievements represented by such efforts. In this regard, it was emphasized that a crucial fact often overlooked is that "if the western Mediterranean front has been the least problematic for Europe in recent years, it is not due to the absence of targeting by human trafficking networks, but rather because Morocco has effectively deployed significant resources – and continues to do so today."
The source further stressed that substantial human, technical, and financial resources have been mobilized for this purpose. It also noted that the collaboration between Morocco and the Spanish government is considered "exemplary." Based on available statistics, the source reported that 74,000 attempts at irregular migration were thwarted in 2025, and 79,000 attempts in 2024, totaling approximately 160,000 thwarted attempts over two years. Additionally, 632 networks involved in irregular migration were dismantled during 2024 and 2025, and over 32,000 successful rescue operations at sea were carried out during the same period. Lastly, it was highlighted that more than 360,000 attempts at irregular migration have been thwarted over the past five years.
