Milestone Achieved in Morocco's Airpower Modernization

Lockheed Martin has announced that the inaugural flight of Morocco's first F-16 Block 72 fighter jet has been successfully completed, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s ongoing efforts to enhance its airpower capabilities. This achievement signifies not only a technological advancement but also a strategic enhancement for the Royal Moroccan Air Force (RMAF) as it seeks to modernize its fleet. The aircraft is currently undergoing a series of flight tests as it prepares for its eventual delivery, signifying steps towards bolstering Morocco's aerial defense.

Technological Advancements and Future Plans

The F-16 Block 72 is the latest and most sophisticated variant of the renowned Fighting Falcon series, equipped with cutting-edge avionics, next-generation sensors, improved mission systems, and enhanced safety features. Mike Shoemaker, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin’s Integrated Fighter Group, expressed optimism regarding this development, stating, "This first flight reflects meaningful progress on Morocco’s F-16 Block 72 program and is a critical step in strengthening Morocco’s future airpower." Lockheed Martin’s longstanding partnership with Morocco, enduring over fifty years, began with the delivery of the C-130H Hercules transport aircraft in 1974. Today, Morocco's military capabilities have expanded to include a fleet of F-16 fighters, C-130s, advanced radar systems, and Black Hawk helicopters. Furthermore, the country is set to receive HIMARS systems, which will provide long-range precision strike capabilities. The establishment of a new Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Benslimane, designed to cover over 8,000 square meters, will further bolster Morocco’s aviation maintenance capabilities. This facility aims to support not just the C-130 aircraft but also plans to extend its services to the F-16s, aligning with Morocco’s vision of becoming a regional hub for aircraft maintenance and overhaul. Following the approval of the sale of 25 F-16C/D Block 72 aircraft by the United States in 2019, valued at approximately $3.8 billion, Morocco is poised to modernize its existing fleet of 23 F-16s, upgrading them to the advanced Viper standard. Once complete, the Royal Moroccan Air Force will possess nearly 50 modernized F-16s, equipped with advanced radars and combat systems, ensuring a robust defense posture in the region.
