Morocco's Handicraft Sector Achieves Remarkable $130 Million in Exports

Morocco's Handicraft Exports Soar to New Heights

In a significant development for the Moroccan economy, the handicraft sector has achieved a remarkable milestone in 2025, with exports reaching an impressive MAD 1.232 billion, equivalent to $130 million. This noteworthy announcement was made by Mustapha Baitas, the government spokesperson, who highlighted the growth trajectory of this vital industry. The current figures reflect a substantial increase from 2019, when exports were recorded at MAD 792 million, approximately $84.13 million, showcasing the sector's robust expansion over the years.

The United States has emerged as the largest market for Moroccan handicrafts, accounting for nearly half of all exports at a staggering 49%. Following closely is France, which represents 10.5% of the total export share. This international demand illustrates the global appeal of Moroccan craftsmanship and the unique cultural heritage that these products embody.

Furthermore, the handicraft sector plays a crucial role in the Moroccan labor market, providing employment opportunities for 20% of the active workforce, with women constituting a significant 54% of artisans. This gender representation not only empowers women but also enriches the sector with diverse skills and creativity. In addition to creating jobs, the handicraft industry contributes notably to Morocco's economic landscape, accounting for 7% of the country's GDP, 7.6% of total exports, and 10% of revenues generated from tourism.

For recent graduates, the handicraft sector presents tangible career opportunities, with 85% of those entering this field finding stable employment. This statistic speaks volumes about the sector's potential to absorb new talent and provide a sustainable livelihood. Baitas emphasized that government support, particularly through health coverage and social programs, has significantly enhanced working conditions, fostering a stable environment for production and craftsmanship.

In a further commitment to this sector, Morocco has recently signed three partnership agreements in Rabat aimed at supporting and modernizing the handicraft industry. Lahcen Saadi, the State Secretary responsible for Handicrafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy, formalized these agreements in collaboration with key institutional partners. This initiative is part of a broader strategy stemming from a framework agreement established on February 13, 2025, which seeks to bolster the development and coordination of regional Chambers of Handicrafts and their federation across the country.
