In the face of climate change and persistent drought, Morocco is taking significant strides towards combating desertification through an innovative approach to reforestation. Waterbox: A Sustainable Solution for Young Trees
The core concept behind Waterbox is straightforward yet effective: it is designed to maximize the moisture in the air, thus providing a controlled irrigation system for saplings. By utilizing a passive collection method, the Waterbox captures ambient moisture, including rain and dew, and distributes it directly to the roots of the trees through a capillary irrigation system. This dual functionality not only ensures that the saplings receive adequate water during their critical early growth stages but also protects them from excessive heat and evaporation. The technology promotes a continuous and controlled water supply tailored to the specific needs of each plant, significantly increasing their survival rate to over 95%, compared to the typical survival rates of 50-75% for unprotected plants.
Moreover, Morocco is committed to adapting the Waterbox system to local conditions by developing a cost-effective version that suits the region's climate. The production cost has been dramatically reduced from 150 dirhams for the imported model to just 45 dirhams for the domestically produced version, while also increasing its capacity to 20 liters. This initiative reflects Morocco's dedication to sustainable forestry practices and addressing the challenges posed by climate change.
