Morocco's Position in the Global Prosperity Index 2026
According to the Global Prosperity Index 2026 published by the British think tank, Legatum Institute, Morocco has secured the 76th position worldwide out of 161 countries. This places Morocco as the second highest in the Maghreb region, just behind Tunisia, which is ranked 75th. In comparison, Algeria is positioned at 83rd, Libya at 115th, and Mauritania at 119th. This ranking illustrates Morocco's relative advancement in the context of its neighbors while highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the nation in various development indicators.
Evaluating Morocco's Performance Across Various Metrics
On the African continent, Morocco ranks fourth, trailing behind Mauritius at 63rd globally, Botswana at 70th, and Tunisia at 75th. This relatively high position underscores Morocco's status among African nations in the Prosperity Index, despite persisting issues related to several social development indicators. The Legatum Index is based on a diverse set of criteria that extend beyond mere economic performance, encapsulating areas such as community engagement, economic freedom, personal liberties, health, education, living standards, institutional quality, and overall development. Consequently, the final ranking reflects a broad spectrum of economic, social, and institutional conditions.
Among Morocco's notable achievements, it attained the 54th position globally in the Economic Freedom Index and the 60th in the Community dimension, driven by its performance in the Family Cohesion Index, where it ranked 36th. Additionally, Morocco was positioned 75th in the State Integrity and Institutions Index and 80th in Health. However, challenges become more evident in the Development dimension, where Morocco was placed 103rd globally, with a worrying 122nd position in the Education Index and 104th in Living Standards, both of which significantly impact the country's overall standing in the index.
In the realm of personal freedoms, Morocco was ranked 84th globally, while it stood at 108th in the Opposition and Expression Freedom Index. Furthermore, it occupied the 86th position in the Civil Peace Index, indicating noticeable disparities between the various components of this sector. On a global scale, Switzerland topped the list of the most prosperous countries, followed by Norway, Ireland, Denmark, and Finland. Conversely, the Central African Republic, Chad, Niger, and Eritrea found themselves at the bottom of the rankings, with a strong presence from Eastern European countries, including Estonia at 19th and Lithuania at 25th. France, Spain, and Italy are ranked 21st, 26th, and 28th, respectively.
In terms of Western powers, the United States ranked 17th, slightly ahead of the United Kingdom at 18th. Washington benefited from favorable results in living standards and national income per capita, while it continues to grapple with weaknesses in health, family cohesion, and community aspects.
