Morocco's Resumption of Cattle and Meat Imports from Europe Remains Uncertain

Challenges Facing Morocco's Meat Import Plans

In stark contrast to the hopeful tone expressed by the French Minister of Agriculture and the head of the French Professional Federation for Meat and Livestock regarding the imminent resumption of cattle exports to Morocco, credible industry sources have revealed to Hespress that this expected revival is still "far from reality." Well-informed sources disclosed that representatives from Moroccan companies specializing in importing cattle and meat from Europe received a "firm and shocking" response from officials at the Ministry of Agriculture, which firmly rejected the reopening of import channels from the European market at this time, without providing a clear timeline for any future review of this decision.

According to information obtained by the newspaper, these industry stakeholders seized the opportunity presented by the International Agriculture Conference in Meknes to gauge the ministry's stance on the potential resumption of import operations, given the shifts occurring in the global market due to the repercussions of the Middle Eastern conflict. However, the response was decidedly negative, leading to confusion among professionals who had pinned their hopes on an imminent easing of restrictions.

This stance comes at a time when diplomatic and professional indicators suggested otherwise, especially following comments made by the French Minister of Agriculture during her participation in the International Agriculture Exhibition in Meknes, where she spoke of "advanced consultations" with the Moroccan side aimed at resuming cattle exports to the kingdom. Sources emphasized that health considerations related to safety standards and the protection of the national herd from diseases prevalent in Europe represent "a decisive factor in the decision." They confirmed that the reopening of imports from Europe "cannot take place before the next summer season."

Furthermore, the same sources indicated that the resumption of cattle and meat imports from Europe could potentially occur in November at the earliest, suggesting that importers would need to wait at least another six months. Industry players had been anticipating a breakthrough in this matter, particularly given the stakes involved in ensuring adequate supplies to the national market and controlling meat prices, amidst increasing calls for greater transparency and communication from the relevant authorities, especially in light of rising prices in the Brazilian market.

It is noteworthy that Alexandre Schidfel, head of the Foreign Trade Committee of the French Professional Federation for Meat and Livestock, expressed optimism in a statement to Hespress during his attendance at the International Agriculture Exhibition in Meknes (SIAM), indicating a desire to "move forward with health opening files that we expect to complete to effectively resume export operations by 2026."
