Morocco's Rise in FIFA Rankings: A Historic Win and Strategic Partnerships

Morocco Secures 8th Position in FIFA Rankings After AFCON Victory

Morocco is poised to ascend in the FIFA rankings, gaining an impressive 18 points and solidifying its 8th position, just behind the Netherlands. This anticipated rise follows the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) announcement that Morocco has been declared the winner of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025. The victory was confirmed by CAF's appeals body, which awarded Morocco a 3–0 forfeit win after Senegal withdrew its players prior to the finals held on January 18 at the Complexe Moulay Abdellah in Rabat. This decision overturns the uncertainty surrounding the match result, which had been left in suspense when the Senegalese team refused to participate.

As a consequence, Senegal has seen a decline in its ranking, dropping two spots to 14th place. The Teranga Lions had previously experienced a remarkable climb, jumping seven places immediately after the final, achieving the highest FIFA ranking in their history. Morocco’s achievement in securing the 8th position marks a significant milestone, reinforcing its stature as the second-highest ranked African nation ever, surpassed only by Nigeria, which reached the fifth position in April 1994.

Upcoming Friendlies and International Relations

In the wake of their AFCON triumph, the Atlas Lions will reconvene for the first time this month, preparing for two friendly matches. They are set to face Ecuador on March 27 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, followed by a match against Paraguay on March 31 at Stade Bollaert-Delelis in Lens, France. These matches will provide an opportunity for the team to build upon their recent success and further develop their skills on the international stage.

In addition to sporting achievements, Morocco's strategic importance is underscored by international diplomatic relations. On the ground, the Military Sealift Command's Spearhead-class expeditionary fast transport vessel, the USNS Yuma (T-EPF 8), made a port visit to Tangier, Morocco, on March 19, 2021. The Yuma operates under the US flag, part of the Sixth Fleet, focusing on interoperability training and fostering strategic partnerships with African nations.

Furthermore, Morocco's realistic autonomy plan for the Sahara issue continues to receive praise at the United Nations, with global diplomats and experts recognizing it as a viable solution, in stark contrast to the destabilizing actions of the Algeria-backed Polisario militias. Meanwhile, France has reaffirmed its support for Morocco, advocating for the free movement of traffic at the Guerguarat crossing between Morocco and Mauritania, while also emphasizing the importance of maintaining the ceasefire with the Polisario. Christian Cambon, President of the French Senate's foreign affairs committee, has highlighted Morocco as a crucial ally in Africa.

Additionally, a significant shift in leadership dynamics in Tehran has sent ripples across North Africa, which, as analyst Amine Ayoub suggests, could pose an existential challenge for Algeria. The destabilization in Iran threatens to remove a long-standing diplomatic and ideological support that Algeria has relied upon, potentially altering the geopolitical landscape of the region.
