Significant Counterterrorism Operation in Morocco
Moroccan authorities have announced the apprehension of ten individuals suspected of being part of a network linked to the jihadist group Islamic State (ISIS). These suspects reportedly had advanced plans to carry out terrorist attacks within the African nation. The General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) released a statement via social media, revealing that the operation was initiated based on "precise intelligence information". This operation successfully dismantled "highly dangerous terrorist plans that were in an advanced state of preparation," highlighting the proactive measures taken by Moroccan security forces in combating terrorism.
The coordinated raids occurred simultaneously across various cities, including Casablanca, Agadir, Taroudant, El Hayeb, Tétouan, Fkih Ben Salah, and Safi, resulting in the arrest of the ten suspects. Among those detained was an individual with a history of terrorism-related offenses, as well as a minor. During these operations, authorities seized an array of weapons, military uniforms, equipment, and documents containing extremist content and detailed instructions on how to manufacture explosive devices.
In addition to physical items, agents confiscated digital materials, including two recordings featuring pledges of allegiance to ISIS and explicit threats regarding the execution of sabotage acts in Morocco. A vehicle intended for use in a terrorist attack against sensitive targets and facilities was also located and subsequently led to the evacuation of the area for a thorough threat assessment. Upon inspection, authorities discovered butane gas canisters and pressure cookers, some filled with nails designed to act as shrapnel, all connected to electrical wires.
The investigations revealed that the leader of this terrorist cell assigned roles among members according to directives from ISIS. Some suspects were tasked with selecting targets, while others conducted reconnaissance and surveillance, and some were responsible for procuring materials necessary for the attacks. The DGST has further specified that investigations are ongoing to clarify any potential connections between this cell and the ISIS faction operating in the Sahel region, as well as to identify the possible national and international implications of this terrorist group.
