Morocco's Commitment to Addressing Irregular Migration
On August 4, 2026, a Moroccan official emphasized that addressing the issue of irregular migration is a collective responsibility among all stakeholders. The official underscored that Morocco has consistently borne its share of this responsibility, marking the second official statement from Rabat since the recent surge of mass migration attempts towards the Spanish-administered city of Ceuta. This statement follows a press conference held by Morocco's Ministry of the Interior on the previous day.
The Moroccan News Agency reported that a government official, who chose to remain unnamed, stated that Morocco has remained a sovereign, loyal, and responsible partner in the fight against irregular migration. The official asserted that Morocco has never succumbed to pressure nor acted out of coercion or under duress.
He further elaborated that commitment and responsibility have always been the primary driving forces behind their actions, noting that migration is a complex phenomenon that requires all parties to assume their responsibilities fully. Morocco, according to the official, has been diligent in fulfilling its obligations.
This commitment is reflected in the tangible results achieved, even if some perceive them as mere formalities without appreciating the significance of the accomplishments. He highlighted that considerable human, technical, and financial resources have been mobilized for this purpose, and the cooperation between Morocco and the Spanish government has been exemplary.
The official reiterated that managing the irregular migration issue is indeed a shared responsibility and reaffirmed that Morocco has taken its share of this duty seriously. In reviewing the results of their efforts, he reported that 74,000 attempts at irregular migration were thwarted in 2025, while 79,000 were prevented in 2024. Additionally, 632 human smuggling networks were dismantled during this two-year period, along with over 32,000 successful rescue operations conducted at sea.
On Sunday, the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior announced that approximately 40,000 individuals had attempted to reach Ceuta through irregular means, an event that tragically resulted in the loss of 11 lives. The ministry stated that Moroccan authorities continue to work with their Spanish counterparts to verify reports of fatalities and to ascertain the actual number of individuals involved, along with their identities.
