Morocco's Strategic Shift Towards Civil Nuclear Energy

Morocco Embraces Civil Nuclear Energy as a Key Component of its National Strategy

During the Second World Summit on Nuclear Energy held in Paris, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch articulated Morocco's commitment to responsibly and gradually integrate civil nuclear energy into its energy matrix, viewing this as a natural evolution of the country’s national strategy. Akhannouch, who represented King Mohammed VI at the summit, emphasized the significance of an integrated energy strategy that is built on three foundational pillars: the diversification of the energy mix, the development of renewable energy sources, and the enhancement of national energy security. He projected that by the end of 2025, renewable energy would account for over 46% of Morocco's installed electricity capacity, with expectations to reach 52% by 2030.

Akhannouch further underscored the broader implications of civil nuclear energy, highlighting its potential to unlock numerous opportunities in various sectors, such as the production of green hydrogen, seawater desalination, nuclear medicine, and food security. He pointed out that Morocco's phosphate reserves contain significant amounts of natural uranium, which adds a strategic dimension to the country’s role in global discussions surrounding civil nuclear energy.

The Prime Minister also stressed Morocco's dedication to international cooperation in nuclear energy, noting that the country is a signatory to all international agreements related to disarmament and non-proliferation, and that it fully respects its commitments. In a landscape where energy stability has become a matter of sovereignty, Akhannouch asserted that civil nuclear energy represents a crucial strategic lever. He stated that the accelerating impacts of climate change, the rising demand for energy worldwide, and vulnerabilities in supply chains necessitate profound transformations in energy systems, making low-carbon solutions, such as nuclear energy, increasingly pertinent.
