Motsipe's Firm Stance on AFCON 2026 Hosting
In a recent press conference, Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), stated his decisive refusal to withdraw the hosting rights of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations from Morocco, despite receiving requests from various national federations to relocate the tournament following its rescheduling from February to July. Motsepe emphasized that his decision was rooted in ethical considerations, asserting that CAF is committed to honoring Morocco’s right to host the competition.
Motsepe elaborated that after Morocco requested the postponement of the tournament, he was approached by several countries and federations expressing interest in hosting the event. However, he firmly rejected these overtures, highlighting the moral obligation to maintain the tournament in Morocco. He stated, "From an ethical standpoint, it is unacceptable to remove the hosting rights from Morocco."
Increased Prize Money to Boost Women's Football
In addition to maintaining the tournament in Morocco, Motsepe announced an increase in the prize money for the winning team, raising it to two million dollars (20 million Moroccan dirhams). This initiative aims to enhance the status of women’s football across the African continent and encourages teams to strive for greater success in the sport. Motsepe reiterated his ambition to see an African team triumph in the FIFA World Cup, emphasizing the continent's wealth of exceptional talent capable of competing at the highest levels.
