Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat Awarded 'Stadium of the Year' as Morocco Prepares for 2030 World Cup

The Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat has been recognized as the 'Stadium of the Year 2025' by the specialized portal StadiumDB, marking a significant achievement for Morocco as it gears up for the 2030 World Cup. This prestigious accolade was awarded after the stadium triumphed over 28 other venues that were inaugurated between January and February of the previous year. Following a two-year renovation, the stadium was recently reopened in September and is now vying to host one of the two semifinals of the upcoming World Cup.

Designed by the renowned architectural firm Populus, the Moulay Abdellah Stadium boasts a seating capacity of 68,700, making it the third-largest stadium in Morocco, surpassed only by the Hassan II Stadium in Casablanca, which can accommodate 115,000 spectators and is a candidate to host the World Cup final, and the Grand Stade de Tanger, which seats 75,600. Morocco has gained increased recognition within the realm of international sports, showcasing five contenders for the title of 'Stadium of the Year,' including the previously mentioned venues.

The Moulay Abdellah Stadium is poised to be one of Morocco's crown jewels for the future. Remarkably, it was constructed in just 24 months, a record time considering the scale of the project, with an estimated investment exceeding 300 million euros. The stadium complex includes an indoor pavilion, an athletics stadium, and an Olympic swimming pool. It features 110 VIP and VVIP boxes, five lounges with a combined capacity of 5,400 seats, and a press tribune that accommodates over 1,800 journalists.

What truly sets the stadium apart is its stunning exterior. The facade employs a parametric design inspired by intertwined palm leaves that line the grand boulevards of Rabat, as well as Morocco’s rich artisanal heritage, including the traditional 'Point de Fez' embroidery. With an estimated area of 100,000 square meters, the stadium's facade is illuminated at night by a massive animated screen that incorporates 70 kilometers of LED pixel bars, capable of projecting up to 60 frames per second.

For both Morocco and FIFA, the Moulay Abdellah Stadium is recognized as one of the venues with the highest potential. Its efficacy has already garnered approval and acclaim, having served as one of the key locations during the recent Africa Cup, where it hosted the opening match and the grand final between host nation Morocco and Senegal. François Clement, a Senior Principal at Populous, remarked, "The Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium is the new gem of international football and one of the great stadiums, not only in Morocco but throughout Africa and beyond. Its legacy is reflected in top-tier facilities, improved accessibility for local and international fans, a more enriching experience for the audience, and an increase in revenue."
