National Conference on Circular Water Economy Held in Marrakech

On April 14, 2026, under the theme "Water in a Closed Cycle: Circular Economy in Service of Sustainable Governance," the Association of Life and Earth Sciences Teachers in Morocco collaborated with various national and international stakeholders to organize the seventh national conference at the Museum of Water Civilization in Marrakech. This event was part of the National Water Week 2026, aimed at promoting innovative and integrated management of water resources through the adoption of circular water economy as a strategic lever for public policy transformation.

According to a press release, this initiative aims to enhance water resource management, value non-traditional resources, reduce waste and pollution, ensure sustainable and equitable financing, and strengthen the sustainability of water-related services. These objectives align with the principles of integrated water resource management and the relevant laws and regulations in this field.

The conference serves as a central milestone within a national program that is being implemented throughout the year, involving a wide range of actors, including public institutions, local communities, the private sector, civil society, academic institutions, and international partners. The goal is to develop practical and innovative solutions while advocating for the integration of circular water economy into public policies.

Participants included representatives from several institutions, such as the Association of Life and Earth Sciences Teachers in Morocco - Marrakech Branch, the Marrakech City Council, the regional multi-service company of Marrakech-Safi, the regional center for education and training professions, the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water in the region, the Tensift Water Basin Agency, and Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech, alongside the Palm Oasis Observatory of the city.

The conference also witnessed the signing of a partnership agreement between the Association of Life and Earth Sciences Teachers in Morocco - Regional Office of Marrakech-Safi and the regional multi-service company, aimed at enhancing cooperation in water management and territorial innovation.

The agenda included a framework presentation on the topic: "Circular Water Economy in Morocco: Current Situation and Prospects," followed by a session dedicated to sharing national experiences, featuring several national and international institutions such as the Tensift Water Basin Agency, the regional multi-service company of Marrakech-Safi, the German Cooperation Agency, the United Nations Development Program, the Sustainable Marrakech Project, the Marrakech City Council, and Cadi Ayyad University, as well as the regional center for education and training professions.

Subsequently, the conference organized a session focused on the collective development of recommendations concerning governance, institutional and legislative frameworks, innovation, and financing, with the aim of expanding the adoption of circular water economy at both local and national levels.

At the conclusion of the conference, participants adopted the "Marrakech Declaration on Circular Water Economy," which serves as a collective call to action for collaborative efforts to make circular water economy a means of ensuring water sovereignty, enhancing climate resilience, and pursuing sustainable and equitable territorial development. This declaration emphasizes the importance of valuing every drop of water, managing it responsibly and rationally, for the benefit of current and future generations.
