Establishment of a Sustainable Logistics Corridor
A groundbreaking initiative is underway to create a logistics corridor for electric trucks that will link Agadir in southern Morocco to Perpignan in southern France. This development is the result of a collaborative agreement between several companies, including Gotion, Green Power Morocco (GPM), and Chery Heavy Trucks, aimed at promoting cross-border freight transport with lower emissions. According to a recent press release, this ambitious project seeks to establish a more sustainable and efficient transportation network.
Details of the Corridor and Future Plans
The corridor spans an impressive 2,000 kilometers, connecting Agadir through the Port of Tangier to Perpignan, which currently sees daily traffic from approximately 2,000 heavy trucks. The partners involved in this project aim to gradually introduce electric trucks and the necessary infrastructure to significantly reduce emissions along this critical trade route. In this regard, the Chinese battery specialist Gotion, which is partly owned by Volkswagen and operates a facility in Morocco, will join forces with GPM to create a joint venture focused on managing electric fleets, battery swap stations, intelligent dispatching, and energy storage solutions. The initial phase of the initiative will include deploying 100 heavy electric trucks equipped with Gotion’s battery systems, with future expansions contingent upon infrastructure readiness and operational performance.
Currently, a solution for battery swapping is being developed to minimize downtime and enhance the operational efficiency of heavy-duty trucks. This effort is supported by initiatives aimed at standardizing batteries and improving lifecycle management. As emphasized in the press release, the project integrates electrification, energy infrastructure, and digital logistics to create a scalable model for reducing freight emissions. However, there are no current announcements regarding carbon neutrality, as future environmental performance metrics will rely on verified data and certification. Instead of setting fixed targets, the project aims to begin electrifying the route to gather valuable insights and experiences.
Phil Jenkins, CEO of GPM Holding, commented on the collaboration by stating, "This partnership combines Gotion's battery technology with Chery's manufacturing capabilities to develop tailored electric logistics solutions that meet regional demands. The Moroccan logistics sector holds significant long-term potential." Li Zhen, Chairman of Gotion High-Tech, added, "This is an important step towards expanding the application scenarios for our battery technologies and supporting practical, scalable solutions for more sustainable freight transport."
