Nigeria Unveils 20-Year Aviation Strategy with ICAO in Marrakech

Nigeria's Ambitious Aviation Roadmap for the Future

Nigeria has achieved a remarkable milestone in its aviation sector by securing a comprehensive 20-year strategic roadmap from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) during the opening session of the ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS) held in Marrakech, Morocco. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, proudly accepted Nigeria's Civil Aviation Master Plan (CAMP), which was endorsed alongside 21 other nations as part of the Marrakech Call to Action. This initiative marks a significant step towards modernizing Nigeria's aviation infrastructure and operational standards.

Transforming the Aviation Landscape

The CAMP, which spans from 2025 to 2045, is designed to revolutionize the aviation landscape in Nigeria, aiming to establish a self-sustaining ecosystem that minimizes reliance on foreign resources while enhancing the national GDP through increased trade and tourism. The roadmap focuses on several key pillars, including safety and oversight, infrastructure development, capacity building, sustainability, and investment in local facilities. The goal is to maintain a zero-accident record while transforming airports into economic hubs that could generate jobs and stimulate trade. Specific strategies involve the development of Aerotropolis—airport cities that incorporate hotels, malls, and cargo hubs, thereby enhancing economic activity in the regions where they are located.

Additionally, the plan emphasizes the establishment of Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities within Nigeria to curtail capital flight and generate local employment opportunities. It also seeks to cultivate a skilled workforce through targeted training programs for the next generation of pilots, engineers, and air traffic controllers, ensuring that the aviation sector is well-equipped to meet future demands.

Special Advisor on Media and Communications to the Minister, Mr. Tunde Moshood, highlighted that the presentation of the CAMP during the symposium underscores Nigeria's commitment to aligning with international best practices in aviation development. The ICAO plays a pivotal role in these modernization efforts by providing the necessary support, regulations, and standards for safety and efficiency in aviation operations. The initiative, which commenced in September 2024, involves a comprehensive training program that gathers key stakeholders from Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem to collaborate on its successful implementation.
