North America Unites in Health Measures Ahead of 2026 World Cup

In a significant collaborative effort, Canada, the United States, and Mexico announced on Thursday a coordinated approach to public health measures aimed at travelers arriving from African regions most vulnerable to the Ebola virus. This joint initiative, as outlined in a shared statement from the three countries, is designed to ensure the safety of citizens, millions of expected visitors, sports fans, athletes, and tourists during the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, while simultaneously maintaining trade and border travel.

The three nations, which will host the World Cup from June 11 to July 19, 2026, emphasized that the health and safety of everyone in the region is their top priority as they prepare to welcome the world to North America. This World Cup will make history by including 48 teams for the first time, marking a significant expansion of the tournament.

According to a report published by the Congolese Ministry of Health on Wednesday, the cumulative number of suspected Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed one thousand, with 238 reported deaths. The World Health Organization has classified the outbreak of this rare strain of Ebola as a public health emergency of international concern. Over the past fifty years, the Ebola virus has led to the deaths of more than 15,000 individuals in Africa, with fatality rates ranging from 25% to 90%, as stated by the World Health Organization.
