Key Agreement to Propel Sustainable Development in Morocco
The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) and OCP Group have taken a significant step towards sustainable industrial development by signing a €450 million partial credit guarantee in Rabat on May 22, 2026. This agreement aims to bolster the investment program of OCP Group, a global leader in plant nutrition solutions and phosphate-based fertilizers. The initiative is designed to enable the mobilization of an impressive €530 million green financing facility, facilitated by Société Générale and BNP Paribas, thereby marking a pivotal advancement in the realization of OCP Group's investment strategy from 2023 to 2030.
This groundbreaking agreement is the first of its kind in Morocco, showcasing the AfDB's pivotal role as a catalyst for innovative financing solutions that support energy transition and sustainable water management initiatives. The agreement aligns seamlessly with OCP Group's strategic objectives to enhance and modernize its value chains while simultaneously fostering resilience and sustainable transformation within Morocco's agricultural systems. It underscores the AfDB's commitment to its Four Cardinal Points, particularly in relation to large-scale capital mobilization and the development of resilient, value-creating infrastructure.
Transforming the Agricultural Landscape
Achraf Tarsim, the Country Manager of the African Development Bank Group in Morocco, emphasized the importance of this agreement, stating, "The signing of this agreement reaffirms our commitment to OCP Group’s investment program. Leveraging our AAA credit rating, we are mobilizing international capital to accelerate the development of low-carbon fertilizer production, the deployment of renewable energy, and sustainable water management. These are strategic levers in support of food security across the continent." This sentiment is echoed by Younes Kchia, CFO of OCP Group, who noted that this agreement signals the transition to an implementation phase focused on a low-carbon, circular industrial model. Kchia asserted, "The support of the African Development Bank Group strengthens our capacity to invest in solutions that preserve resources, protect soils, and support farmers. Together, we are contributing to sustainable growth for Morocco, Africa, and global food security."
The financial resources mobilized through this agreement are set to launch transformational projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, expanding renewable energy initiatives, and enhancing water and energy efficiency within OCP Group's industrial facilities. Moreover, these resources will promote sustainable agricultural practices, safeguard soil health, and fortify food security, all while supporting the overarching goal of low-carbon industrial growth in the region.
