OCP Green Energy's Strategic Move Towards Renewable Energy Storage
On September 17, 2026, OCP Green Energy announced a significant milestone in its renewable energy initiatives by successfully completing a 25 MW/125 MWh battery storage system in Benguerir, Morocco. This innovative system is designed to store electricity generated during the day, allowing for a more efficient distribution to meet peak demand hours. The project, which represents an investment of nearly 170 million dirhams (approximately 18 million USD), is part of OCP's broader strategy to transition towards renewable energy sources. By 2027, the company aims to fulfill all its industrial electricity needs through renewable sources, making this project critical for its operational efficiency.
The battery storage system will undergo performance testing before being gradually commissioned. It is strategically linked to the 67 MWc photovoltaic solar plant at Benguerir, which OCP Green Energy has already operationalized. This integration is expected to significantly enhance the company's ability to match solar electricity production with its industrial requirements. Omar Kadir, the General Manager of OCP Green Energy, emphasized the importance of this storage solution in balancing the variable nature of renewable energy production with the continuous energy demands of their industrial platforms.
Future Prospects and Expansion Plans
While the initial installation at Benguerir is a considerable step forward, it is merely the beginning of OCP Green Energy's ambitious expansion plans. The company has set a target to achieve over 1.2 GW of renewable capacity by 2027, which includes an additional 400 MWc of solar power and 600 MWh of storage capacity. Looking further ahead, OCP Green Energy anticipates developing more than 2 GW of renewable energy capacity and at least 2 GWh of storage. The deployment of 125 MWh of storage at Benguerir marks an essential first phase in the company’s broader commitment to clean technology, positioning it for leadership in the renewable energy sector in Morocco and beyond.
