Strategic Developments in Dakhla
The Provincial Council of Oued Eddahab has unanimously approved a series of significant socio-economic and environmental projects during its ordinary session held in Dakhla this June. The session, presided over by Council President Mohamed Salem Hamia and attended by Abderrazak El Gourji, the Secretary General of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region, brought forth important initiatives aimed at enhancing the region's infrastructure and social welfare.
Among the key decisions made during this session was the adoption of the fourth amendment to the partnership agreement with the national airline, Royal Air Maroc. This agreement is designed to enhance air connections serving the city of Dakhla. According to the proposed amendments, Royal Air Maroc has committed to initiate a new air route between Marrakech and Dakhla, which will feature two weekly flights. Additionally, the existing Rabat-Dakhla route will be boosted from two flights to three weekly, a move intended to support and invigorate tourism activities in the Oued Eddahab province and the broader region.
Investments in Environmental and Social Welfare Projects
Furthermore, the Council approved a partnership agreement concerning the development of a green belt around the city of Dakhla, with a total estimated cost of around 40 million dirhams (MDH). The funding for this project will be shared among various local councils, including the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab regional council (20 MDH), the Oued Eddahab provincial council (5 MDH), the Dakhla municipal council (10 MDH), and the El Argoub municipal council (5 MDH). This agreement outlines the commitments of the involved parties regarding the project's execution, which will roll out in two phases across a total area of 60 hectares.
The local development company, “Dakhla Aménagement et Développement,” will oversee the delegated project management for the first phase, which encompasses roadworks, trails, and various amenities. The second phase, dedicated to reforestation efforts, will be managed by the National Agency for Water and Forests.
Additionally, the Council members endorsed a partnership agreement aimed at supporting the social programs and services provided by the “SOS Villages d’Enfants Maroc” Association in Dakhla. This agreement seeks to contribute to the financing of operational costs and daily care for children, as well as bolster the social programs and services offered by the association to enhance the social protection and living conditions of children in the Oued Eddahab province.
Moreover, the Council adopted a procedure to support projects initiated by civil society associations within the Oued Eddahab province, subsequently approving the reallocation of budget credits earmarked for the 2026 fiscal year.
